flyinpig over on NASIOC has translated some news from Japan. Looks like the next generation Legacy will be getting Fuji Heavy Industry’s new chain belt CVT. FHI first announced it was developing a CVT transmission back in mid 2007.

Fuji Heavy Industries: Next-Gen Legacy to Get Newly Developed Chain Belt CVT First

FHI will commence use of its newly developed chain belt type CVT in the next-generation Legacy, which is due to hit the market next year. The new transmission, which will be coupled with FHI’s distinctive boxer engine and all-wheel drive system, will be able to handle a substantial amount of torque.

Compared with a typical five-speed automatic transmission, it is anticipated that the new CVT will get 10% better fuel economy. With the plan to improve fuel consumption, this CVT is expected to become the main transmission system offered in the future. Implementation will start with the Legacy and then will gradually be adopted to other models such as the Impreza and Forester.
